AO6 Senior Project Officer About the role This role will undertake activities to support the management of risks associated with abandoned mines. This includes assessing and planning for the delivery of major project works associated with care and maintenance or remediation of abandoned mines and associated infrastructure, in conjunction with the Director, Project Managers, and other internal and external resources.
This will include tasks across a range of fields, such as technical, risk and project management, to support the advancement of defined projects in accordance with the Project Management Framework. Other activities include desktop and field assessments in response to public notifications and enquiries, general stakeholder engagement, and interaction with other departments and agencies that overlap with abandoned mine sites.
This role will focus on implementing the Risk and Prioritisation Framework for Abandoned Mine Management and Remediation including:
- Achieving outcomes consistent with Queensland’s Abandoned Mines Management Policy
- Identifying risks to public health and safety, environment and property associated with abandoned mines
- Prioritising abandoned mine remediation based on risks assessed in a consistent, repeatable manner against the Abandoned Mine Land Program (AMLP) criteria
- Ongoing monitoring, analysis and reporting of identified risks and benefits of AMLP mitigation activities
- Assessing re-commercialisation and re-purposing opportunities for abandoned mines
Your key duties and responsibilities In this role you will:
- Assist in the development and implement of project management plans for nominated projects.
- Develop the technical specifications required to engage consultants and contractors in line with relevant department procurement processes.
- Undertake procurement planning and execution in line with the approved budget.
- Consult with administrative, management, regional staff and other key stakeholders on project scope and development to build effective relationships and share expertise and knowledge.
- Undertake effective management of contract activities and assess the performance of the contracts against the performance and evaluation criteria.
- Provide assistance to field staff, to ensure supervision of consultants and contractors whilst they are on site, ensuring they work in compliance with a person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) obligations, site HSEMP requirements and legislation.
- Complete desktop assessments, including collection and review of available public and departmental data, associated with abandoned mine sites and associated infrastructure. This can include spatial data, previous internal reports and records, as well as information provided by third parties.
- Consult and communicate with project stakeholders and deliver upon negotiated consultation outcomes.
- Plan, commission, monitor and interpret findings from technical investigations, studies and field monitoring activities into a proposed project scope for management consideration.
- Interpret technical and other reports from a range of stakeholders and use them to guide project planning and risk management.
- Assist in the preparation of briefs, letters, reports, submissions and recommendations on complex issues in regard to abandoned mines including departmental and Ministerial requests and media releases as required.
- Understand and incorporate project and operational risk assessment processes into management plans and be able to facilitate workshops to characterise relevant risks and controls.
- Abide by the Health Safety Environment Management System (HSEMP) at sites.
- Other duties as directed and required.

What we’re looking for:- A university degree from a recognised tertiary institution qualification in a technical field (e.g. Environmental, Science, Engineering, Geology etc) would be highly regarded
- Experience in the mining industry is desirable
- Proven project management qualifications and experience is desirable
- Proven risk management qualifications and experience is desirable
- A current open C class driver licence as stated in the Requirements section
- Travel away from the centre may be required. This may involve travel outside of normal office hours and/or overnight accommodation for extended periods.
- Physical fitness is necessary for field work in remote locations with challenging terrain
Requirements- Open C class driver’s licence is mandatory
- White Card, or ability to obtain within 1 month of commencement
- Must be an Australian citizen, have permanent residency status or a visa permitting you to work in Australia.
