PO2 - Plant Pathologist - Dutton Park

Location: Dutton Park
Hours: 29 hours per week. Monday - Friday
Contract: Casual contract - Until March 2027

About the Role:
As a Plant Pathologist, you will support applied research and diagnostic services for the cotton industry, working closely with scientists, industry partners, and growers.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Contributing to applied research projects on cotton pathogens aligned with industry and departmental priorities.

  • Delivering plant disease diagnostics and supporting pathology reporting services across Queensland and New South Wales.

  • Applying molecular biology techniques (including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, sequencing, and LAMP assays) to support disease diagnostics and overseeing daily laboratory operations.

  • Isolating, identifying, and maintaining fungal and bacterial pathogens using microscopy and molecular methods.

  • Analysing disease data and communicating findings through clear written reports and presentations to scientific and industry audiences.

  • Supporting field, glasshouse, and laboratory experiments, including trial design, pathogen inoculation, disease assessment, and surveys across cotton-growing regions.

  • Assisting with project planning, milestone delivery, and reporting requirements.

  • Building strong working relationships across research teams and industry stakeholders while working with a high level of autonomy.

Essential Requirements:

  • A degree in Agricultural Science, Science, or a related discipline from a recognised tertiary institution, or equivalent qualifications relevant to the role.

  • Practical experience in laboratory, glasshouse, and field-based research techniques applicable to plant pathology.

  • Demonstrated expertise in molecular plant pathology, including hands-on experience with DNA-based diagnostic methods.

  • Willingness to work outside standard hours, travel to regional locations as required, and undertake outdoor work.

  • Strong organisational and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team, manage priorities, and meet deadlines.

  • A current C Class driver’s licence.

  • Applicants with international qualifications must obtain an assessment confirming comparability with the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF)

PPE Requirements:

  • You will be required to wear appropriate PPE at all times while working in laboratory or field environments, as directed by Supervisors.

  • PPE required for laboratory and field work will be provided by the Customer.

  • You must supply your own enclosed footwear and suitable protective clothing in accordance with Workplace Health and Safety requirements.

Other Requirements:

  • Compliance with all relevant legislation and workplace health and safety obligations while working in laboratory and field environments.

  • Completion of required inductions and health and safety training, including building and emergency procedures.

  • Adherence to the client's Code of Conduct, policies, and standards

  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the role, including standing and working in the field for extended periods.
