Electrical Trade Assistants - $45/hr + penalties | Ongoing shifts | Critical airport infrastructure


We are seeking qualified and experienced Electricians to support the installation, testing, maintenance, and repair of Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) systems in Townsville. This role involves working on critical airside infrastructure including runway, taxiway, and apron lighting - with rates of $65/hr plus penalties - potential ongoing work for 12-24 months for the right people. 

What You’ll Do
  • Install, test, commission, and maintain AGL systems including runway, taxiway, and approach lighting
  • Work on stop bars, guidance signs, inset lights, Constant Current Regulators  (CCRs), secondary circuit transformers, isolation transformers, pit/duct systems, and series circuits
  • Carry out preventive and corrective maintenance on AGL components
  • Diagnose and repair faults in underground cabling and lighting circuits
  • Interpret and work from technical drawings, schematics, and AGL design plans
  • Install and terminate airfield lighting cables in compliance with ICAO and local standards
  • Use specialized AGL testing equipment (megohmmeters, photometric testers, loop testers)
  • Coordinate with airside operations to complete works during runway closures or low-traffic windows
  • Follow all airside safety procedures including permits, FOD control, and radio protocols
Skills & Qualifications
  • Trade certification/licence as a qualified Electrician
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience in AGL, airside, or infrastructure electrical works
  • Knowledge of ICAO Annex 14, IEC 61821, and CAP 168 (or local equivalents)
  • Understanding of series lighting circuits and CCR operation
  • Ability to read and work from AGL layout and circuit drawings accurately
  • Valid airside pass, or eligibility to obtain one
Desirable:
  • Training in AGL system design or maintenance
  • Certification in airside safety or airport operations (e.g., AVSEC, ADA licence)
  • Familiarity with SCADA, PLC, or lighting control systems
  • Experience with LED-based or solar-powered AGL
Working Conditions:
  • Work is primarily outdoors, often during night shifts or scheduled runway closures
  • Exposure to aircraft noise, weather conditions, and strict airside operational protocols
  • Work may involve digging, confined spaces, and lifting heavy components
  • Use of PPE including hearing protection, high-visibility clothing, and arc-flash protection
Health & Safety Compliance: All tasks must comply with aviation and electrical safety regulations. Electricians are expected to follow permit-to-work systems, risk assessments, and airside operational safety protocols at all times.

Start date 18th September - Nightshift to start.
