Strategic Investments and Enterprise Finance team on a contract basis.
This is an exciting opportunity for a finance professional with strong technical accounting expertise to play a key role in the management of capital assets, capital budgets, and financial reporting across the department.
Hours: 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday
About the Role Working within the
Capital Maintenance and Asset Accounting Team, you will provide high-level accounting, reporting, analysis, and advisory services relating to capital projects, asset accounting, and financial management compliance.
You will work closely with internal business groups, senior management, Queensland Treasury, and external stakeholders to ensure the department's capital and asset accounting activities are managed effectively and in accordance with government financial management frameworks and accounting standards.
Key Responsibilities As the Senior Asset and Capital Accountant, you will:
- Prepare and analyse monthly capital project reports, reconciliations, briefing notes, and presentations on complex asset and capital management matters.
- Provide expert financial analysis, insights, and recommendations to support informed decision-making.
- Contribute to the development, implementation, and review of capital management policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, government guidelines, accounting standards, and financial management frameworks.
- Provide timely and professional advice to business groups regarding:
- Capital Work-in-Progress (CWIP)
- Asset acquisitions
- Asset accounting treatments
- Relevant accounting and treasury policies.
- Ensure the department’s annual capital budget and budget revisions are accurately reflected in:
- Queensland Treasury Budget Papers
- Tridata
- Internal financial records.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with stakeholders, including senior management, Queensland Treasury, and external service providers.
- Support the development and maintenance of effective internal controls over capital processes and asset accounting activities.
- Communicate asset and capital-related financial information to a variety of stakeholders, including auditors and senior executives.
- Maintain current knowledge of Australian accounting standards, government financial reporting requirements, and industry best practice.
- Provide support to the Manager, Capital Maintenance and Asset Accounting as required.
About You To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:
- Proven experience in asset accounting, capital accounting, and financial reporting.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and financial management skills.
- Sound knowledge of:
- Australian Accounting Standards
- Queensland Treasury Financial Reporting Requirements
- Non-Current Asset Policies
- Government financial management frameworks.
- Experience preparing complex financial reports and reconciliations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain technical financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
- Strong stakeholder management and relationship-building capabilities.
- High attention to detail and ability to work effectively in a complex environment with competing priorities.
Highly Desirable While not mandatory, the following qualifications and memberships will be highly regarded due to the technical nature of the role:
- Relevant tertiary qualification in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related discipline.
- Membership with one of the following professional bodies:
- CPA Australia
- Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ)
- Institute of Public Accountants (IPA) (MIPA status).
