Engagement Officer – Biosecurity & Beekeeping Sector Location: Brisbane, QLD

A leading government department is seeking an
Engagement Officer to join their
Varroa Mite Innovation and Resilience Initiative (VMIRI) team in Queensland. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to proactive biosecurity efforts that support the honeybee industry in managing and slowing the spread of Varroa mite.
Role Overview: As part of a dynamic and collaborative team, you will engage with commercial and recreational beekeepers across Queensland to deliver education, resources, and support on Varroa mite management and broader bee biosecurity practices.
Key Responsibilities:- Lead and deliver engagement activities focused on best practice Varroa mite management.
- Develop written extension materials and contribute timely progress reports to VMIRI project leads.
- Conduct training workshops and support improved industry monitoring and data collection on bee pests.
- Drive beekeeper participation in the annual national COLOSS survey.
- Collaborate with Queensland’s Bee Biosecurity Officer and other stakeholders to foster innovation in the honeybee sector.
- Offer practical, accurate advice to industry participants on General Biosecurity Obligations and management strategies.
Essential Requirements:- Willingness and ability to travel, including outside standard hours and interstate as required.
- Physically fit to work outdoors on uneven terrain and in various weather conditions.
Highly Desirable:- Degree in Agricultural Science, Biological Science, or equivalent.
- Knowledge (or willingness to learn) about Integrated Pest Management related to Varroa mite.
- Understanding of Queensland’s beekeeping and pollination industries and related biosecurity challenges.
- Proven ability to deliver training and outreach in a scientific or agricultural setting.
- Practical experience in bee biosecurity, especially in commercial or semi-commercial apiaries.
